I want to share the most powerful piece of advice I’ve ever received when it comes to starting the new year with energy, purpose, and enthusiasm.
CLEAR SPACE. 🙂
I love goal-setting, and I think it’s fun to dream about what the new year will bring, but when you try to set goals on top of a cluttered mind, a cluttered office, a cluttered home, etc. it feels incredibly overwhelming.
David Allen, bestselling author of Getting Things Done®, taught me that if instead of focusing on goals, we focus on clearing space, we will naturally start to think of new ideas, projects, plans, and dreams. Our minds will finally have the room to breathe, and it will feel amazing.
I have implemented this over and over again, and I promise you it works.
Today I’m sharing a few resources we’ve created here at LearnDoBecome that can help, and I can’t wait to hear about your results!
(1) The Clean-A-Drawer Challenge
If you have a “junk drawer,” or several junk drawers, I guarantee this quick tutorial will do the trick. Cleaning a drawer sounds basic, but there are some simple mindset shifts that will help you to actually DO it.

(2) The Three-Box Method for Organizing Your Space
Again, this feels really basic, but most people don’t take this first step when they attempt to clean up a room.
(3) How to Map Out Your Home and Life Organizing Plan
This–right here–really is the secret. Once you learn the skills needed to clear your space, you’re going to want to tackle every nook and cranny TODAY. But these things take time, and if you can create a prioritized list–and work through it bit by bit, you’re going to wake up one day in a totally clean home, with a totally calm mind, and you’re going to say, “Wow!!! I feel SO GOOD!!!”
Okay, that’s my piece of encouragement for you today. I personally have exciting plans to put away all of our Christmas decorations, clear out my office closet, and do a full sweep of our home, my mind, my routines, etc.–getting rid of anything in my life that I don’t LOVE.
It doesn’t all have to happen today. In fact, it’s usually several weeks of little tasks here and there, nestled between the regular activities involved with my family, work, and community. But what starts to happen is that our definition of “normal” becomes elevated. Our homes will be naturally cleaner, more streamlined, and more peaceful. Our minds will naturally be calmer, more creative, and more present with the ones we love. And then our lives start to feel more purposeful and meaningful each day–even when we’re dealing with challenges that would ordinarily have sent us back to bed.
I feel this happening in my own life, and I SEE it happening every day with our LearnDoBecome community members, and I just want you to know that I am fighting to help this happen more fully in your life–because I know it will make a difference. I know you’ll feel more connection with heaven, more hope when you think about the impact you can make in the lives of others, and more excitement for each day that you have the privilege to live.
Sending so much love to all of you as we step into this new year!
xoxo

This was such a FUN, GREAT way to do something small enough to handle! Getting the house clean one drawer at a time! Thank you!
