Hello, and welcome! Today we are talking about creative ways to invest in YOU.
When we first talk about investing in yourself, you might think “Well, of course I want to do that, but how?” Or perhaps you feel that on top of all of your daily, weekly, and monthly priorities– it’s just too difficult, scary, or boring. But we promise that when you look at who and what you want to become and how you want to grow, THAT is when investing in yourself can become the most exciting and rewarding! So click “play” below to start investing in you, or scroll below to skim the show notes.
An Introduction to Investing in Yourself:
We all have different passions. A first step you can take today is to think about what lights you up—and then consider starting an initial investment in a related area. Here are some ideas:
Free Investments:
Here are a few common resources that may be packed with information, but won’t put a strain on your wallet!
- Podcasts
- Videos
- Checking out books at the library
With free resources, it’s helpful to start discerning what you want to learn and focus on first in order to know where you’re headed. There are plenty of search engine recommendations and free resources on the internet, but it’s easy to drown in the vastness of that rabbit hole. A small tip to avoid this would to be to hone in (as much as possible) on exactly what it is you are hoping to learn and find. This way you don’t get distracted or discouraged by all the potentially-irrelevant information that may be available on your topic of interest.
Lower-Cost Investments:
- Used books from the library
- Books from yard sales, thrift stores, etc.
- GreatCourses subscription
Yesterday, I was at the library and noticed a used book section where the books were priced much lower than your typical book store. I was able to get 3 books for $1 each! For such a low investment, I get to continue to learn and grow, and I get to keep those investments—or pass them on as I wish. All for a few dollars.
Another really great resource I would recommend is GreatCourses.
If you haven’t heard of GreatCourses, it’s somewhere around $10-12.50 a month (at the time of this recording) for a subscription that gives you access to a ton of recorded courses from college professors across the nation in their areas of expertise. These topics vary across a wide-range of subjects, and even include languages! You can find a link to their subscription below.
One of the best parts about this form of learning is that you can listen to the lectures and videos while you are doing other things or on your daily commute. However, we encourage you to keep in mind that you will get the BEST investment out of your time learning if you choose to do so in designated blocks of time so you are able to focus on retaining the information you are taking in.
Paid Investments:
These may be higher cost investments, but are also usually high reward in terms of accountability and content.
- Courses or online classes
- Memberships
- Going to conferences
We’ve learned over time that being able to sign up for something and put money down on it will increase your commitment, AND you get better results because you want to get value out of the money you spent.
When we started LearnDoBecome, we took some classes on how to start a podcast, how to create a website, how to set up hosting, how to run paid advertising, etc. We invested in things that opened up doors for us to grow—which has allowed us to serve so many people. You can start small and build up to something larger, but even those small investments do have a great return.
As a side note, if one of the reasons you don’t sign up for courses is because you buy them and never do them, we’ve linked below to a post on our website about how you unlock the power of courses.
A helpful KEY step in this is breaking courses down into bite-sized pieces!
If you feel like you struggled as a student in high school or college, and you often felt overwhelmed with all the things you had to get through, our post linked below may be a great resource for you. When you learn how to create your classes as “projects” and incorporate them into your routines with next actions to get them done, you’re able to actually get through them AND enjoy them step by step!
Learning starts to get really exciting when you realize that the more education you get (formal or informal), the more prepared you will be for success. Education shapes your mind, builds connections, and helps you develop incredible skills.
Education and “investing in yourself” is something we’re extremely passionate about, but we want you to think about it in a way where you can see that the challenges you have right now are things you have the power to overcome—and that YOU have the ability to meet your goals by taking action!
Going back to WHY investing in yourself matters:
Investing in ourselves can be as simple as developing talents and abilities so we can give back and contribute in our communities, homes, and places we value.
