If you’re looking for a simple, yet powerful way to shift your beliefs so you can step into a greater life for yourself, this is for you. 🙂
And I know it sounds a little silly–or it may seem like this kind of thing wouldn’t work quickly enough, but I’ve had a pretty amazing experience over the past couple of weeks, and I want to share it with you.
The fact of the matter is that most (if not all) of us are afraid of change, growth, progress, moving forward, etc. There are really good reasons we’re holding back (we discussed some of those in Episode 149), and sometimes our subconscious is protecting us SO WELL that we wonder if we’ll ever be able to achieve that awesome life we envision for ourselves.
A couple of weeks ago, I had a phone meeting with a wonderful business/mindset coach, and when I shared all the fabulous reasons I’m afraid of my goals, she didn’t try to “talk me out of my fears” or tell me why I’m lame for having them.
Instead, she invited me to write a letter to that scared part of myself–explaining why it’s okay for me to dream big and why that scared part of me needs to take a step back and stop bothering me.
I recorded a 5-minute podcast sharing my thoughts about the invitation for “part 1” of today’s episode, and then I recorded a ~5-minute podcast right after I wrote the letter–sharing why this exercise was so powerful, and why I think you should try it, too!
I’m not including the whole letter here because it’s pretty personal, but here’s the beginning and end, if you want a clearer picture of what this could look like:
Dear April Scared,
I really appreciate you. Truly—I do. You have been with me my whole life and have done a GREAT job keeping me out of dark alleys, making sure I didn’t end up in precarious situations, helping me stay on top of my deadlines, and motivating me to do a lot of good things in order to protect my family and the ones I love. You watch out for me constantly, and that feels amazing to know that someone is scanning the world, looking for threats, and giving me wise advice to help me stay safe.
But when it comes to pursuing my goals and stepping fully into my purpose, I must insist that you take a step back and calm down.
I understand why you are concerned. It’s been quite a journey over the past 15 years. There were many times I jumped into projects and initiatives without knowing exactly what I was doing, and some of those situations ended up taking a LOT of effort, energy, and emotion to rectify. There were moments that felt pretty hopeless, there were people whose feelings I hurt, and sometimes I suffered heavy losses financially, socially, and relationally.
I know you don’t want to see me sick from stress, waking up panicked in the night, or emotionally weighed down. And I agree. I don’t want those things either. But right now, I distinctly hear a calling to step into my personal mission of helping others to get out of overwhelm, and if you try to stop me every time I attempt to move forward, I’ll never be able to do what I am meant to do.
You understand that, right? You don’t want me to live a life of regret or spend all my time avoiding the very things that make my heart leap, do you? And you definitely don’t want to leave people in a state of suffering when there is SO much that can be done to give them relief. And sure, theoretically that might all sound great, but I get it. It’s the logistics you’re worried about. So let’s review a few reasons why this work is different than everything that happened before.
[Then I included 5 important things to remember….]
So as much as I love and appreciate you, I hope you will understand that your worry around me accomplishing my goals is totally unnecessary at this point. I still definitely appreciate your encouragement to eat healthfully, exercise, get sufficient sleep, and take time for replenishment. And I definitely appreciate the caution when it comes to working too hard or too long during the day—because I want to make sure I maintain a balanced life and invest in the things that matter most.
But other than that, please join me in the faith and hope that is leading me along right now—and if I somehow get it wrong, I will take responsibility for that, and I won’t blame you one bit. So you can take a deep breath and just relax and enjoy the adventure that’s ahead of us. It’s going to be wonderful!
Love,
April Strong
I know that there is a lot of internal work going on for you right now. It may feel tempting to just dive into things like cleaning your closets, drawers, pantries, emails, etc. (and those are great!), but it is a thousand percent easier when your subconscious mind is encouraging you and cheering you on. And THAT only happens if you teach it and train it to do so.
I hope this podcast is helpful for you, and once you have gotten your mindset where you’d like it to be, if you’re ready to work with us more fully at LearnDoBecome, I’m including 3 options below.
Sending a huge hug and lots of love!
April

The actual concept content is thought and action provoking. The title was confusing in that the podcast did not specifically address having a morning and night routine. I am not talking about giving away content. I am talking about clarity and accuracy in labeling the title of the podcast.
April Perry says
Thanks for the feedback, Anne! The title is referring to the morning and night routine of listening to the “letter”—as a way to change our brains, but I’m sure I could have thought of a better title. Is there something specific you would like addressed in a future podcast about routines?
Anne says
Thanks for responding. Topic Suggestion- What are elements of a good morning/evening Routine
Kaitlyn says
That makes sense! What a great thing to read each morning and night.
Polly says
So much in your letter is relatable to me! I’m printing it to help me write my own letter. But so much is the same in my thinking. Thanks, April Strong!

But, I will be back. Reaching out though to tell you – I do love this. I need to do something like this and after I get thru a few other steps (getting child off to college this week) – and others – I will be back.

Oh my goodness! I needed this right now. I have been writing a novel for decades and I’m so close to finishing but I hear my 3rd grade teacher in my head and abandon writing. I know what the problem is and of course it bleeds into everything I want to accomplish. So I’m going to write a letter to 3rd grade me. Even saying that makes me shake inside. But the me now knows I’m called to write books. And I’m missing my destiny because of a ignorant 3rd grade teacher? 🤔 Okay April Strong. I’m going in. Writing the letter then finishing the book by December 31, 2022
3rd grade me.🫣 Me today 🥹 Me the next few months ✍🏽 Me December 31st 📖 🤗
April Perry says
This makes me so happy!! You’ve got this, Toni! You’re going to feel amazing as you get writing–and there’s no pressure or “perfect” outcome. The success is in the doing and the trying and making it happen. We feel happy when we’re making progress, and I am thrilled for you! It’s probably going to be an emotional experience as you write that letter, but it is worth it. Good luck!
Michelle says
Thank you for sharing such a personal letter with us April. I think I need to do this for myself. I feel a bit helpless because of circumstances I can’t control, but I’ll bet there is strength that I can find. Thank you for your out-of-the-box thinking and ability to assess how life can be more fulfilling and meaningful. This is something I appreciate about you.
April Perry says
Thank you so much for your kind words, Michelle! I love the perspective that there is always strength we can find—even when some (or many) things are out of our control. Keep up the great work!
