Today’s episode provides some hopefully quick and simple shifts you can make in your life in order to reap some incredible benefits. It will be particularly helpful if you’re balancing personal, family, and professional responsibilities, and I hope it encourages you!
(1) Spend a few minutes creating each day.
There’s nothing wrong with being spontaneous and flexible–and a lot of joyful days aren’t “planned,” but just a few minutes looking at my appointments, responsibilities, goals, nutrition, exercise, rest, relationships, etc. have been incredibly helpful to me.
We have a YouTube video that dives deeper into this (published February 2023), if you’d like to click the image below to visit our channel and check it out!
(2) Digitize as much as possible.
If you have papers all over your desk, kitchen counters, etc., it’s simple to take photos or scans and store them in the app of your choice. (I use Evernote.) As long as you put the images into organized folders/notebooks and label them with keywords you’ll remember, it makes it SO much easier to save information that you might need at a future date!
(3) Use the 2-minute rule.
This is something we talk about often at LearnDoBecome that I learned from David Allen, author of Getting Things Done®. Essentially, if you can do something in two minutes or less, you just do it. You don’t write it down or procrastinate it. Sending money via VenMo, texting someone about a carpool, or adding a conference to your calendar are all simple things you can just DO–so they don’t need to clutter up your lists.
Sometimes there are a LOT of two-minute tasks, so if you’re wondering what to do there, we have a YouTube video (May 2023) on our channel that shows how tasks can often be grouped into projects. You can click either of the images below to visit YouTube. 🙂
(4) Reset the room.
When I was growing up, I had such a problem with this. I unintentionally left a trail everywhere I went, and it drove my mom crazy….
Now I have a habit (and our family generally does the same) of “resetting the room.” We fold blankets we got out, push chairs back in, immediately put dishes in the dishwasher, etc. Then we never have to do a major cleanup because the house essentially stays clean.
(5) Build a STEP Command Central.
I know that this tip isn’t something you can do in a few minutes, but it is honestly the best thing I’ve ever done to help me get organized. Prior to building my Command Central, I had a little voice in my head constantly talking to me and reminding me of things I needed to do. Now my mind is quiet because my system is carrying the load.
We have a post called “How to Start STEPping for Free,” if you’d like some quick links to learn more!
I hope that these ideas can be helpful for you. Perhaps you could apply them to your life and see if you’re breathing more deeply and feeling more confident.
If you’re overwhelmed, there are things you can do to create a calm, peaceful daily experience where you wake up excited and go to bed content.
Thanks so much for being with us!
