Brief Synopsis of the Podcast:

On a personal level, I have admired Sharon Eubank for years as I have observed her humanitarian work and listened to her speak on several occasions, and there have been so many times I have wanted to ask her for guidance.

My question was essentially, “What should I do so my efforts have the greatest impact?”

When I heard that Sharon had written a book, I ordered it right that minute and then reached out to see if I could help promote it in any way because I knew it would be incredible. And it is!

This quote from the introduction of her book shared that others have had similar questions to mine: “I have become sensitized to the pent-up desire so many feel to give of themselves and help others with something useful and honorable, and I also have a sense of the fear or self-criticism many have that what they offer will never be enough to make a difference.”

Here at LearnDoBecome, we have an amazing community of people who want to create lives where they wake up excited and go to bed content. They want to get organized, they want to prioritize their families, and they want to do good with their energy–whether that is through their paid or volunteer work.

And in today’s world, we all want to feel empowered to DO something that can help create more peace and unity. It just often feels hard and big and complicated to actually make a difference.

Not anymore!

In the interview, we cover three key lessons I learned from the book (and more–but here’s a start):

(1) Being a humanitarian is less about money and more about connection.

(2) You are the gift.

(3) Exchange and sustainability are important in any type of humanitarian work.

Here are a few quotes from her book that I asked her to elaborate on:

“No one is too poor, too disabled, too marginalized, too street weary, or too anything else to contribute something of value to society.” (We shared how everyone brings value, and service is not about one person who HAS resources giving to someone who DOESN’T. It’s about connection and exchange.)

“In humanitarian circles, the tidal wave of unusable donations that clogs up the logistics is called the second disaster.” (She shares some specifics that are incredibly eye-opening and offers a great perspective on how to give what is needed when, where, and how it is needed.)

“Of course it is harder to work where you live. It’s harder because we understand the dynamics and real barriers that may be invisible to us in unfamiliar cultures and places.” (It often feels cleaner/easier to go to a foreign country and do good, but if we can slow down, ask the right questions, and actually help meet the needs are right in front of us, we can create lasting change.)

There is so much more, so please go listen to the podcast! I know you will feel uplifted in a way that won’t cause you to feel exhausted.

The ideas shared here literally contribute to World Peace–in a way that empowers each one of us.

I loved this episode. The book is in my Amazon cart. April – I just wanted to share what I was thinking about as you were wrapping up the podcast. You talked about not doing great things like building a school or developing a mentor program – but I got to thinking that what you are doing is the step before the school, program, etc. You are helping your community to bring order to chaos SO THAT we can GO and do the things that God has uniquely gifted us to do. Imagine the impact you are having as you teach us how to build and maintain order. How many projects are ACTUALLY getting done because of the principles that you teach. How many schools are being built, programs being designed and lives being changed because of what we have learned. What you are doing is “teaching us to fish” so that our minds and lives are open to use the skills we have been created with to go and make an impact in the world around us. So, for that – thank you.

Angela, this comment meant SO much to us! Your perspective inspires me. I shared it with Eric today, and he said, “I think this might be one of the best comments you’ve ever received.” THANK YOU for your support and for doing good out there in the world!

I treasured this podcast about Sharon Eubank. A great humanitarian with beautiful messages for so many people.
I want to encourage both April and Eric to continue sharing this amazing model, Sharon Eubank, and others like her, for teaching Humanitarian examples so that we may all help to make a better world.
I have only one constructive criticism for April and that is to try to hold your infectious giggles while speaking and to finish your thought. I can’t hear you through your adorable giggles. I love you guys and thank you both from the bottom of my heart for everything that you’ve given me and all the encouragement and support over the years. I’m making progress everyday and I wouldn’t be if it had not been for you! You’ve changed my life and my depression for better living.

You are so sweet, Annie! Thank you for your encouragement and support! And I appreciate the feedback. I honestly don’t even recognize how much I laugh. (It’s just part of me!) But I will try to speak clearly and not laugh at the same time. So grateful you are here with us! xoxo

I truly enjoyed learning about Sharon Eubanks and her amazing work. Thank you for the introduction! I will share this podcast with my Soul Sisters. We will have many good conversations around this and Sharon’s new book as I am sure it will be one we read and discuss in the months ahead. Also, I plan on sharing this with my daughter who is struggling with a number of things which can be lumped together as ‘overwhelm’ with life and how she fits into it (as a young adult, just finished college and trying to find her way).
